Whilst traffic from Trinidad and Tobago grew by 5%, from 991 last July to 1,041 this July, the number of arrivals from Martinique fell by 13%, from 3,675 in July 2007 to 3,193 this year, and from Barbados fell by 20%, from 1,557 arrivals last year to 1,250 in July 2008. Soca superstar Machel Montano to grace Billboard Magazine Cover

Soca superstar Machel Montano will become the first soca artiste to be featured in the next issue of the prestigious music industry publication, Billboard Magazine, after headlining the annual Crop Over celebrations in Barbados last week.

Calypsonians Sparrow and David Rudder graced the magazine’s cover in 1993.

Billboard Magazine appears weekly. The next issue featuring Montano is scheduled to hit the newsstands this Friday.

Montano was interviewed for a special feature on Crop Over and its
headline act by veteran writer, Pat Moschino, even as he became the
face of the annual Bajan festival for the first time.

Montano headlined bMobile’s “EnVy” concert on July 26 and the Brian
Lara All-Inclusive Fete on August 2, then attracted and celebrated with
a sold-out crowd at Cohobblopot on August 3, before rounding off his
first complete Crop Over experience with the street parade for Grand
Kadooment on August 4.

Montano’s extensive presence
in this year’s Crop Over celebrations was part of a strategic
initiative by the Bajan government to boost not only the turnout at the
Cohobblopot event, but the global presence of the festival and the
tourism product offered by the island in general.

From all accounts, Montano delivered the goods both on-stage and
off, and successfully generated all the hype that was expected from the
top name in soca music.

According to president and CEO of the Barbados Tourism Authority,
Stuart Layne, “Montano’s presence attracted a significant increase in
local, regional and international media coverage of this year’s
festival” and also sold-out the annual Cohobblopot event, which had
been suffering from low turnouts in recent years.

“I was delighted to come to Barbados to celebrate Crop Over, even
though it meant skipping Caribana in Toronto, mainly because four
members of my band are from Barbados and it means a lot to be able to
come home and celebrate with them,” said Montano of the experience.

Montano will also be featured at upcoming Carnival celebrations in
London and New York later this month, but will first journey to the US
capital where he will join dancehall icon, Shabba Ranks, for a special
“Clash of the Titans” show on August 15 at the DAR Constitution Hall in
Washington DC.
